RYE Sea Cadets have received a special award from Lord Lieutenant for East Sussex for their efforts in raising funds for the The Royal British Legion’s 2013 Poppy Appeal.

Officer in Charge of Rye Sea Cadets Chief Petty Officer Steve Smith said: “Being one of Rye’s last remaining youth groups, It is important to show the people of Rye how its young people can be engaged in positive activities, and the young cadets themselves didn’t hesitate when the call for help went out.

“The cadets covered a number of two hour slots around Rye Town in some rather miserable weather collecting over £500.

“ Rye Sea Cadets would like to exceed this total in 2014 and would like other young people from the Rye the area to join in this worthy cause.”

The Cadets received certificates at a special awards ceremony last week hosted by Lord Lieutenant Peter Field .

Rye Sea cadets take part in a variety of activities including, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, band, canoeing, mountain biking, rock climbing, navigation and chartwork, seamanship, marine engineering, first aid and the BTEC Level 2 diploma in public services .

They have also won a number of awards in shooting contests.

Sea Cadets are often present at civic occasions such as Mayor Making and the Cinque Ports Speakership and help out at events like the Rye Maritime Festival.

Rye Sea Cadets are now recruiting for juniors aged 10 – 12 years old on Fridays from 7.30pm - 9pm and seniors aged 12 – 18 on Mondays and Fridays from 7.30pm - 9pm.
