People will still be able to indulge in the seafood delights of Ray Bay Scallop Festival as it draws to a close this weekend.

The festival got off to a great start last weekend with scallop shelling demonstrations at the fishing quay and scallops to be found on the menu at virtually every Rye eatery.

Organiser Oliver Campion says the demand for the locally caught delicacy has been unprecedented this year.

The Ypres Inn is reported as having got through 38 kg of scallops on the opening day alone.

This week saw local girl Yasmin Clemson being crowned Rye Scallop Queen.

It was a double celebration for Yasmin who also celebrated her birthday during Scallop Week.

Wednesday saw scallops take centre-stage at the Farmer’s market on Strand Quay,

And there are plenty of events to enjoy over the next few days.

On Friday 27 Landgate Bistro holds its big Scallop Bash from 6.30pm when people can sample dishes on a six course tasting menu such as scallop cerviche with wild herbs, and scallop ravioli with peanuts, lemongrass and black kale.

Scallops prepared by award winning chef Kyle Tatner will be paired with wines at a special event held by Olde Worlde Wines, in Cinque Ports Street, on Friday February 27 from 4pm and Saturday 28 from midday.

Kyle has gained a variety of cooking styles from his travels around the globe, from French cuisine to Asian street food.

Appearing at the Queen’s Head Inn on Friday 27 is Kevin Armstrong (who is to play with Iggy Pop at the Wembley concerts opening for the Foo Fighters) performing an acoustic set with X Factor’s Hannah Bradbeer.

On Saturday morning Russell Drew will be found at Market Fisheries talking about scalloping and showing off his shucking skills. There’ll be another chance to taste his Scallop Cerviche too.

Hot Potatoes are performing at The Queen’s Head Inn on Saturday evening and The Ship Inn will have their “Scallops on Stage” menu available.

On Sunday it’s time for the “What a Load of Scallops” race (10am at The Ship Inn) and in the afternoon at 4pm Martin Blackman and Jim Board are playing at the White Dog Inn at Ewhurst Green.

Titus will then be performing at 7pm at the Ypres Castle Inn.
