Scary passenger books place in East Preston Festival parade

GUESTS and committee members riding in style on the open top bus in East Preston Festival’s carnival procession will be joined by probably the most eccentrically-dressed passenger to travel with them.

But then, it is a scarecrow. . .

And no ordinary scarecrow, but the winner of the festival’s first-ever scarecrow competition, which attracted 15 weird and wonderful entries for judging on Friday May 31).

Evelyn Allen, of Downsway, was the winner of the £25 first prize with her colourful character promoting various aspects of the festival, including the dog show, Nappy Run, Owls About Town display, raffle tickets and the official programme.

Tim Critchfield, of Willowhayne Avenue, took the £10 second prize with a witty reflection on lengthy delays at the village’s two level crossings, including barriers on the scarecrow’s outstretched arms.

The scarecrows were spread out across the village, and the festival’s new chairman Ian Gordon was delighted with the first-time response.

“Everybody said there would be a lot more people making scarecrows next year, so hopefully we will have double the number.

“It would be great if all those who made them this time could put them back in their front gardens for this final weekend of the festival, to give us all a smile again.”

With sunshine and blue skies blessing this, his first festival at the helm, he hopes the good weather continues through to the weekend for the carnival.

“The sunshine has really helped us so far and really adds to the atmosphere, putting everyone in a good mood. I’ve never known such a good buzz about the village.

“The Elvis tribute concert on Saturday night was a roaring success, with people dancing all over the place, and it was fantastic to see so many at The Party on The Green on Sunday.

“Let’s hope it carries on to this weekend for our carnival to bring out the crowds and so we can get a good collection for the charities.”
