Search for wind surfer

A search for a wind surfer who was reported missing last Thursday afternoon proved to be a false alarm.

The alarm was raised by a member of the public who saw a person clinging onto a board and believed them to be in trouble.

A search was conducted between Central Car Park at Camber and Jury’s Gap on the eastern end of Camber and back but no-one was found to be in trouble.

At 4pm it was agreed that following a comprehensive search of the area.

Lifeboat Operations Manager at Rye Harbour RNLI Lifeboat Station, Richard Tollett said: ‘“Whilst on this occasion it was a false alarm with good intent, it is always necessary to check.

Statistics show that approximately 150 people drown around the UK coastline each year, more than those killed in cycling accidents.”
