'˜Silver Sunday' turned back the clock for Burgess Hill residents

Residents were invited the annual event at St Wilfrid’s Church on Sunday, September 30 where they enjoyed a day of fun and free activities.

Susan Fleet and Dave Farmer were on hand to provide the afternoon’s musical entertainment, as well as Burgess Hill Radio which provided more celebratory music.

This year’s event was the sixth year running for the organisers of ‘Silver Sunday’.In previous years, it was held in Market Place Shopping Centre and was organised by manager, Chris Goldfinch.

Mr Goldfinch has now retired and the town council said it did not want to deprive the community of the event, and offered to take over the event and move location to St Wilfrid’s Church.

Cllr Pru Moore, leader of Burgess Hill Town Council, said: “The senior citizens that came along, enjoyed a delightful tea as well as fun and games.

“After Chris Goldfinch retired, the council did not want to see this event fade, so we decided to take over.”

Silver Sunday is a nationwide day, which is celebrated on the first Sunday of October. The day was created to tackle the blight of loneliness that affects so many older people.

As well as, celebrating the contribution of older people to society, also increases their happiness and wellbeing.

Silver Sunday provides an opportunity for authorities and charities to promote the work they already do.
