'˜Six month wait' for St Leonards door repair

The faulty door at Wyvern House, Warrior Square, was first reported in August as it was not attached to the rotten frame properly, according to Mary Hawk.

The landlord Places for People said the ground floor door was not reported to them until Wednesday, February 10, and it was repaired on Tuesday (February 16).

Ms Hawk said the door nearly fell on her when it was propped against the wall but her daughter pulled her out of the way just in time.

“We first reported it in August but the people here never do anything,” she said.

“Getting people to do anything is nigh on impossible.

“Someone could have got injured badly and I’m not the only person who uses it.”

Ms Hawk was also concerned about the security issues with not having a functioning back door.

Before the door was fixed, the 73-year-old felt like she was invisible and no one cared for their safety.

An East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service business safety inspection officer was called to inspect the door on Tuesday and they reported it to Places for People.

The company said a replacement door will be fitted within the next two weeks but in the meantime, it is secure and there are other escape routes.

“There are two escape routes for the five ground and lower ground floor flats in the event of a fire and the second escape route remained in full working order throughout the maintenance works,” a Places for People spokesman said.

“We are grateful to the fire service’s business safety inspection officer who visited the scheme on Tuesday and discussed our immediate remedial work to secure the block, with another fire exit available to use.”
