By phoning the national number '“ 0800 1 513 513 - callers can find out:

information about swine flu

advice on viruses

what preparation is going on across the country

and what everyone can do to protect themselves

The information line is part of a national campaign to provide more information for the public on swine flu.

Adverts are running in newspapers, on radio and on TV offering information about swine flu and advising people that basic hygiene measures are the best ways to protect against the disease.

Peter Hayward, Acting Director of Public Health for West Sussex Primary Care Trust (PCT), said, "It is always very important for everyone to remember good hygiene tips '“ cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, use a tissue when possible, throw it away quickly and wash your hands straight after. A

"lso regularly washing hands with soap and water and cleaning hard surfaces with a normal cleaning product can both help to reduce the spread of any virus."

The national swine flu information line is available on 0800 1 513 513.

However, if you have recently visited one of the countries or areas where human cases of influenza have been identified, it is important for you to monitor your health closely for seven days after your visit to the affected area.

There is no need for you to isolate yourself from other people as long as you remain well.

If during this period you develop a feverish illness accompanied by one or more of cough, sore throat, headache and muscle aches, you should stay at home and contact your GP by phone or seek advice from NHS Direct (0845 4647).
