THE HEAT IS ON FOR CYCLIST STEVE

DEATH Valley in California looms for veteran cyclist Steve Berry.

The 58-year-old English Nature officer, from Kingston, near Lewes, is to undertake the torturous journey to raise funds for the Mines Advisory Group (MAG).

Said Steve, who cycles into Lewes to work and back every day: 'Governments are far better at laying mines than removing them when conflicts are over - a task which often falls to charities.

'MAG clears mines from former war zones all over the world. It began in 1989 and now has 2,300 staff in 14 countries.'

The ride, with 35 riders, is 250 miles long over four and a bit days.

Rubbing shoulders with Steve will be Steve Harley, singer with the rock band Cockney Rebel.

Steve will, sensibly, be doing the ride in March when the desert temperature should not exceed the 70s. It will, however, be bitterly cold at night.

He added: 'I will myself meet the full costs of my registration, air fare, accommodation, food, insurance and contribution to the back-up team.

'That means that every penny I raise will go to MAG.

'I am contracted to raise a minimum of 1,000 and have to pay 2,000 (including most of my own costs) by December 16.'

Steve is looking for some financial help. He can be contacted at home on 01273 487743.
