The Taming of the Shrew1920’s style

To celebrate the author’s 450th birthday, Bexhill Amateur Theatrical Society (BATS) are mounting an epic, lavish and colourful production.

Director Mike Poole says their take on the play will be great entertainment. He said: “It’s set in the sophisticated style of Gatsby’s 1920’s with glittering period costumes, singers and dancers and will be a rare and different theatre experience.

“There’s scheming, false identities, lies and of course laughs, as Petruchio pursues Katharina and a whole army of desperate and hopeful suitors pursue her younger sister - who is a lot smarter and tougher than her simpering demeanour suggests.

“It’s a story of love and romance, and how they aren’t necessarily the same thing. The disenchanted Petruchio is marrying for money. The fiery and beautiful Katharina is marrying against her will. They both want to be in charge – and amidst the fighting and screaming, they don’t notice that they may be accidentally falling in love.

“Can true love be found in all this confusion? Well of course it can – this is a comedy after all!”
