Town Crier's job on hold

LEWES Town Council is expected to defer plans for the time being to bring back the traditional post of Town Crier.

There are to be elections in May and members don't want the new council to be tied to a project they may not want to proceed with.

There are also financial considerations. The Crier's uniform won't be cheap.

And there are also questions being asked as to what the Crier will actually be asked to Cry.

Finance committee members meeting on Thursday last week heard the Crier would be asked to proclaim council and public events, but might also be asked to take part in private events over which the council would have little or no control.

And that raised questions over the nature of his role and the image presented to visitors.

Harveys Brewery had offered to meet the cost of an outfit which could be in the region of 3,500.
