UPDATE: Cyclist dies after suffering cardiac arrest on the South Downs near Amberley

A 35-year-old man has died after suffering a heart attack whilst cycling on the South Downs near Amberley.

Emergency services including four South East Coast Ambulance (SECAmb) units and Sussex Air Ambulance were called to South Downs Way one mile from Amberley Castle at around 12.15pm on Saturday January 11.

A spokesman for SECAmb said the service sent its Hazardous Area Response Team due to the inaccessible location of the incident.

“We sent quite a lot of resources, but despite everyone’s best efforts, he was declared dead.”

He confirmed the man had been riding a bike at the time.

A spokesperson for Sussex Police said: “We were called at 12.30pm on Saturday (11 January) to a report that a man had suffered a heart attack at Amberley.

“The man had collapsed on a footpath on the South Downs Way at Amberley Mount. He was declared dead at the scene.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious.”
