Tributes to East Sussex midwife

Yogeeta Chavda, 33, died in a car crash on March 16 while visiting the Gudjarat region of India for a family wedding.

She had worked at the Midwifery Unit at Eastbourne DGH, helping to deliver hundreds of children since finishing her training in 2008.

Kay Plaine, a senior midwife who worked with Yogeeta at the DGH, said she was a popular and talented midwife.

She said: “It sounds like a cliché but she really was one of the kindest people I’ve known.

“She never had a bad word to say about anybody and would go out of her way to keep in touch with people.

“If she hadn’t heard from someone in a while she would give them a call and catch up.

“She was funny and had time for her patients.

“She lacked confidence at the beginning of her training but loved being a midwife in the end and didn’t want to go back into nursing.

“She was an amazing midwife really, well-respected and loved for her cheerful, positive outlook on life.

“While she was in India she planned to visit a birthing centre and to exchange ideas and see if there was anything she might be able to bring back here.”

Yogeeta’s family are organising a donation to Eastbourne maternity unit in her memory.

A funeral service was held in London last week but friends and colleagues from the DGH and Conquest Hospital in Hastings are invited to a memorial walk along the Bluebell Trail on Tuesday, April 12.
