‘True hero of craftsmanship’ honoured at heritage awards

A worker at Battle-based firm Aldershaw Handmade Tiles has been named as the Sussex Heritage Person of the Year.

Anthony C. D. Kindell was announced as the winner of the prestigious Sussex Heritage Trust award at a ceremony last month at Pangdean Old Barn in Pyecombe.

Chairman Dr John Godfrey, DL who announced the award at the 18th annual lunch said: “Down a country farm track about a mile north of Hastings is a factory whose produce contributes greatly to the conservation of many prestigious buildings and has done for the last 17 years.

“The force behind Aldershaw Handmade Tiles is Anthony C. D. Kindell, who despite ill health, is still present daily making hand made roof and floor tiles, employing traditional methods and skills passed down by centuries of English tile makers.

“Anthony is a true and unsung hero of craftsmanship in Sussex.”

The award was one of 20 projects, along with 14 Highly Commended projects, announced this year at the sold-out awards luncheon, with the awards and certificates being presented by President of the Trust, The Rt Hon Lord Egremont DL.

The awards seek to recognise and reward high quality conservation, restoration and good design of newly-built projects and encourage the use of traditional skills and crafts.

The luncheon was this year attended by Michael Foster, DL, High Sheriff of East Sussex and Viscount Hampden alongside the county’s best architects, contractors, chartered surveyors, developers and craftsmen.
