- I was sorry to have to miss the benefice’s second annual Poetry and Prose evening in the Hall last Friday, which seems to have been very much enjoyed by the forty or so people who were there.

There was a wide range of well-chosen readings, rounded off by an impressive piece of recitation by a Udimore churchwarden, and there have been some appreciative comments on the delicious supper.

The organizers would like to thank everyone who was involved in this very successful event, which raised some £350, to be divided between Brede and Udimore Parochial Church Councils.

- Dr Nikki Gammans’ talk on Bumblebees in the Hall on Monday evening for Udimore Wildlife Society attracted an audience of some thirty people, both from the parish and from a wider area.

We were treated to a brilliant account of these fascinating and beautiful insects.

They are of immense importance as pollinators of many of our food crops (we rely entirely on bumblebees, for example, for the pollination of our tomatoes, courgettes, peas, beans and strawberries).

We can all play our part in reversing the serious decline in their numbers in recent years, Dr Gammans told us, by growing pollen and nectar-rich plants in our gardens and providing suitable places for bumblebees to nest. For further information, I can recommend the website of the Bumblebee Conservation Trust www.bumblebeeconservationtrust.org.uk.

The Sale itself will be in the Hall between 10.30am and 12.30pm tomorrow. Hot refreshments will be served.

All proceeds will be divided between Udimore Parochial Church Council and the Hall.

- There are still a few places available for new members of the Brede and Udimore Luncheon Club, which meets in Brede Village Hall next Tuesday (February 28).

These are excellent monthly two-course lunches in friendly, welcoming company, very reasonably priced at £5 a head.

- The Rye and District Community Hub, which is open at Rye Club in Market Road every Wednesday between 10.30am and 12.30pm, is holding an Open Day next Wednesday (February 29), extending its hours from 10.30am till 8pm.

This will be a special opportunity to discover more about the Hub and the facilities which it offers to everyone in our neighbourhood: social chats over a cup of tea or coffee, meeting local community groups and the editorial team of the new free community newspaper “Rye and Winchelsea Looker” and finding out about the new interactive community website.

Well worth looking in, if you’re in Rye that day.
