University will '˜support' higher education in Hastings

Professor Debra Humphris said the university would continue to ‘support’ the delivery of higher education in Hastings and would look to ‘broaden and deepen’ its relationship with Sussex Coast College.

However, the statement does not expand on what the ‘support’ will involve, or how the ‘more sustainable offering’ will affect staff and students.

It also fails to specify what type of changes the students might be consulted on.

The statement from Proff Debra Humphris is below in full:

“As you are aware we have been carrying out an internal review of our higher education provision here in Hastings.

“We are grateful for your patience whilst this has been carried out.

“Uncertainty is never easy and I appreciate how unsettling this may have been for you.

“The review considered a range of possible options and in the light of its findings the university management board was in a position to make a clear recommendation to the board of governors.

“The board of governors met today and endorsed the management board’s recommendation.

“As a result I am pleased to be able to confirm the following:

“The University of Brighton will continue to support the local delivery of higher education in Hastings.

“This will be delivered through an evolution of our current provision into a more sustainable offering focused on meeting the needs of the local community and economy.

“We will look to broaden and deepen our relationship with Sussex Coast College Hastings

“This will provide a solid basis on which to build on the successes of students and staff in Hastings over the past decade.

“There are many successful examples of FE and HE working together over the country and we will look to learn from them.

“You will all continue to be fully supported to successfully complete your studies and will be consulted on any changes affecting you.

“I look forward to meeting with those of you attending the briefing session tomorrow where the deputy vice-chancellor, Chris Pole and I will be pleased to answer your questions.”
