UPDATE: A259 Chichester re-open after lorry crash

The A259 at Chichester has now re-opened following a lorry crash this morning (July 29).

A lorry carrying tonnes of asparagus crashed outside homes in Bognor Road, Chichester, around 2.30am. The A259 Bognor Road was closed in both directions while emergency services cleared the scene, causing congestion around the city throughout the morning.

Police said the driver was taken to St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester but was not seriously injured, and no arrests had been made.

Tony Christofi, 81, who lives in Bognor Road said: “It was a very close thing. I could lean out of my front downstairs window and touch the roof of the lorry.

“Had it been two foot nearer it would have been very different.

“It must have been around 2.30am, there was a terrific bang which woke me up.

“I thought it was thunder and I was tossing and turning trying to get back to sleep when I heard all these sirens and realised there must have been an accident.

“I looked out of my window and there it was.

“What I had of a front garden has completely gone, the wall and bushes, and there must have been two or three tonnes of asparagus piled there.

“There’s a bit of damage to my front door and to the brickwork but otherwise my house is okay.”

Alan and Carol Hawkins live next door.

Alan, 70, said: “We didn’t hear anything at all, we slept through it.

“The first we knew was a call from Tony next door to say look out your window.

“I soundproofed my windows myself so you can’t hear anything outside.”

Carol added: “It’s such a lucky escape.

“We sleep at the front of the house upstairs and so does Tony next door so had it hit our houses, well it doesn’t bear thinking about.

“Our houses are okay and we’re okay so that’s the main thing.”
