Five illegal immigrants have been arrested after they sailed into Winchelsea Beach on Sunday morning (July 31).

Shortly after 8.30am, police were called to Pett Level Road, following reports of a dinghy arriving on land.

Paramedics and members of the Coastguard were also called to the scene.

Three men were arrested on suspicion of gaining illegal entry to the UK.

Two other men were arrested nearby.

The suspects, all adults from Iran aged between 18 and 44, are now being dealt with by the Home Office, a police spokesman said.

A Home Office spokesperson said: “All five must now report regularly to the Home Office while their cases are progressed in line with immigration rules.”

“We are unable to comment further as investigations are ongoing.”
