Video arson bill tops £100,000

STOCK worth more than £100,000 went up in smoke when an arsonist struck, video store owner Steve Ayres said this week.

Last week's ferocious fire totally gutted the Devonshire Road branch of the TVC chain he runs with his wife Ann and parents Peter and Barbara. This week Mr Ayres has toured the devastated store with insurance loss adjusters.

He said: "It is 100 per cent - a total write-off. Everything's gone - videos, DVDs, computer games, all our business equipment. We won't get so much as a pencil out of the place...

"There were around 4,500 videos, DVDs and computer games in there. The loss will be in excess of 100,000.

"We had televisions, video and DVD players in there, two computers plus the confectionery side - it just goes on and on. The more you mentally walk round the place as it used to be the more horrific it becomes."

The firm is relying on the honesty of its customers to return hired DVDs and videos.

A man in his 30s was arrested last week and released on bail.
