According to West Sussex County Council it will be shut until at least Wednesday January 15 after a culvert under the road collapsed after heavy flooding last week.

Part of the road between the Sainsbury’s roundabout and the Boar’s Head pub has been closed since Monday January 6 and has caused widespread disruption to commuters trying to get in and out of Horsham, with other routes affected by diverted traffic.

A spokesperson for WSCC said: “The issue has been tackled as a priority because flooding from adjacent fields poured onto the railway tracks of the Arun Valley line, forcing its closure earlier in the week.

“The culvert, which is about six metres deep, is in an awkward position that makes it a difficult task to replace.

“The culvert is very old and neither West Sussex County Council, nor Horsham District Council, knew it existed before its discovery this week.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused but there is no other way round solving this problem.”
