VIDEO: Worthing Police equipped with body and head cameras

WORTHING police officers will be wearing body and head cameras to catch criminals in the act.

The discreet cameras will enable officers to film and store vital evidence recorded while on duty.

The initiative, being trialled by Sussex Police, aims to help the force prosecute more criminals successfully with strong video evidence to take to court.

Two compact camera devices will be attached to officers' hats or helmets and another to the shoulder.

Constables will tell suspected criminals they are being filmed and the headcam will visibly flash a red light to warn the camera is recording.

It is hoped this will deter anti-social behaviour.

The initiative could also help reduce time and money involved in court cases by encouraging offenders to plead guilty when they have been caught on film.

Victims of crime may be spared of giving evidence in court when clear visual evidence in available.

Superintendant Russ Whitfield said: "The over-riding principle is to improve the service we deliver to the public.

"The camera evidence will support us in a number of areas of policing and help victims and witnesses though the court process."

Supt Whitfield said while the cameras, which record sound as well as images, can be used when police are called to any crime, particular focus will be paid to domestic abuse and anti-social behaviour.

"With the latest equipment it is possible for us to play back the recording almost immediately," said Supt Whitfield.

"This is especially useful in showing parents the activities of their children.

"Also with regard to domestic abuse we believe the cameras will be able to support victims by providing crucial evidence."

Sussex Police previously trialled a small number of body cameras successfully and now with funding from the Home Office is able to issue a further 80 new cameras.

Worthing Police have 20 sets of cameras to use.
