Beckley School log book extracts: - this week are from 1899.

08.02.1899: Had occasion this morning to punish John Paine for careless work - idleness - The boy went home at midday, and was kept at home by his parents. It appears his father has instructed the boy to come home if he is corrected. Wrote to the parents and pointed out that if the boy attends this School he must submit to its rules, and that the parents must not repeat their foolish conduct.

10.11.1899: Had to punish Tom Russell for disobedience to his Teacher. Last week an inquiry was made about the boys’ absence; the father sent back a message which was certainly not polite – parental example, imitation, punishment.

Special offer: if you enjoy the extracts or know anyone who went to Beckley school you can get a special 3 book set from the children’s stall at the upcoming Farmers market or Beckley school office. For just £20 , this would make a great gift for someone who went to Beckley school or who had relatives that did. The set comprises of A year in the life, The Victorian years and The War Years and includes photos from local residents. Proceeds go towards the Beckley School Association. The books are available individually too.
