Netherfield Village Hall Refurbishment: How do you thank people and companies who donated their time, paint, brushes, rollers, T-shirts and a host of other materials, together with a deep-clean, free of charge to change the look and outlook of the Netherfield Village Hall. Without the generosity of Trade Paints Ltd, Hastings and Pass & Move, Football Coaching we would not have had the materials to do the work or the sponsorship for getting the inside of the building to a state where the fabulous five, who became the magnificent seven, could actually set about changing the image of this community asset. So, the Hall's Committee, on behalf of all those who will benefit would like to say thank you to those two companies.

The painters who set about the task were Committee members, a resident and two people from outside of the village, Stuart and Lucy, who gave up their Saturday until 6.00 o’clock, to help make the Netherfield Village Hall a place where people would enjoy going for a function. Filling, smoothing, painting and organising were all tasks that were undertaken by one or more of these stalwarts. The work will be finished next week hopefully and then the task of changing the outside will begin. If you feel like helping then please get in touch.

Netherfield Village Hall Library Service: Thank you, thank you, thank you, to all those kind people who have contributed their treasured books to the library and of course the bookcases. At the moment, not that we have enough, but the interior of the Hall is being refurbished as mentioned above. New colours, bright and vibrant, bringing us in to the 21st century. This means that for two weeks the Library Service will temporarily be closed. In addition, as the Hall has been emptied, storage facilities are at full capacity, and to top it all, your fantastic donations would be unable to be displayed and borrowed. Therefore, I would ask, if you possibly can, to store them until such time as we have completed our new look and can take your gifts with our usual gratitude. Thank you.

Netherfield Village Hall Jumble Sale: Our next Jumble Sale will take place on 6 October 2018 between 10 and 12. All are invited for the bargains that will be available.

Claverham Monday Badminton Club: With the conclusion of the summer activity schedules, such as sea swimming, stoolball, tennis and pebble-skimming, our numbers are likely to increase by at least one. I jest of course but that is why my reader buys the paper so they can pick up tips for their comedy routine. Actually, I am somewhat concerned with the names of some of these summer activities. Stoolball was invented in the 15th Century when milkmaids used their milking stools as wickets. In fact it is sometimes called “cricket in the air”. Just a thought.

Anyway, ten turned up this week, including our lady member Jo, who had said last week she was playing tennis, but mixed the dates and hopefully not the rackets. Some of the games were very intense. I saw, to my utter amazement, one of the longest rallies I have ever seen at the club. It lasted for well over twenty shots. For a little amateur club like ours that is quite a feat. Why don’t you come along and join us? It is 8-10 on a Monday evening and all you need to do is turn up. It is £5 per head for the evening and you will get fit, or, if you already are, maintain that fitness in the future. I look forward to it. Just ask for Roy or Maurice. Reflections on a garden: The virginia creeper is a member of the grape family of plants. It is sometimes called the five-leaved ivy which is somewhat ironic, given that certain species can have three or four leaves. Ours for its sins, is situated alongside one wall of our concrete-sided garage and grows upwards over a pergola that runs the entire length of this ugly structure. It shares this space with hops, a fuschia, ivy and a honeysuckle. Each of the poles has a plant situated at its base, which, as it rises to the top, provides a colourful distraction from the faded magnolia paint, used initially, to bring life to this building’s exterior. As you walk beneath the pergola’s wooden portals throughout the summer these plants do have the effect of achieving their aim of drawing one’s mind away from the offensiveness of the structure, even though it protects its contents. Oh well, you can’t have it all.

Yesterday, the grass was given a trim. Lush, green and rampant as usual, given the return to normality after the summer heatwave. Yes, a weekly cut is the norm, otherwise it begins to look like the modern hairstyles of the young and trendy. I guess it won’t be long now before I can rest the mower and give it its annual sleepover.

The grapes too are looking as though they are ready for picking. I tasted one yesterday and boy was it sweet. The pundits and the know-alls have stated that this year will not only be a bumper harvest but a fine year for wine. I do hope so. Last year’s harvest was disastrous and provided one half-bottle of white. It is fun doing the pressing and fermenting but it loses its appeal when the end result you wouldn’t even even use as paint stripper.
