Northiam

Remembrance: This is a special year, commemorating 100 years since the end of the Great War, and there will be a weekend of remembrance 9-11th November.

There will be an exhibition in the Village Hall on Friday 1-5pm and Saturday 10-5. Teas and coffee will be served by the WI, so do spend some time studying the displays. On Sunday, the Remembrance Service in St Mary’s starts at 10am, moving to the War Memorial for 11am, when flowers will be laid in memory of the Northiam WWI casualties. Let’s hope there won’t be the usual noisy traffic racing past!

On Sunday afternoon there will be a (free) concert in the Village Hall starting at 3pm featuring readings, poetry and music. Once again we are privileged to have renowned soprano Tomasin Trezise accompanied by Northiam Chamber Orchestra. The weekend will close with the lighting of the beacon at 7pm as part of a national commemoration marking the end of the First World War, followed by the ringing of church bells.

Beckley: Beckley are presenting a play based on the school logbooks, and the Beckley boys who went to war and are commemorated on the war memorial. This will be in Beckley Village Hall on Friday 9th November at 7.30pm.

Bonfire Society: Following a most enjoyable Bonfire Procession in Northiam – and some excellent outings to neighbouring Societies – the Bonfire Society meets in the Rose & Crown at 7.30pm on Monday. If you would like to become a member of this vibrant Society, do come along, or contact the Membership Secretary, Val, on 253793.

We were privileged to be invited to process with Cliffe at Lewes on Monday, which was an incredible, if exhausting, experience.

WI: It’s time for the Women’s Institute AGM. Meet in the Village Hall on Tuesday at 2pm to elect a new committee. You might feel able to volunteer yourself? The WI has an interesting, varied programme through the year and is always ready to welcome new faces.

Footpath Walk: On Wednesday, why not join the Footpath Group on Wednesday with a 6 mile walk discovering Beautiful Benenden? Either meet in Northiam surgery car park at 9.30am and share cars, or meet in the recreation ground car park at Benenden in time for a 10am start. There’s a handy pub at the end for lunch.

Flu: Time to get your flu vaccination. This year over 65s will receive a different vaccine from under 65s. This is to ensure that each group receives the best product for them. Over 65s will be vaccinated in alphabetical order, with the clinic for those whose surnames begin K-N on Thursday (15th) 2-3.30pm at Northiam Surgery. Just turn up. Younger patients of the practice who are eligible for free vaccine will need to make an appointment for Monday 5th November from 5pm. Pharmacies nationwide are providing both NHS and private services.

Thursday Seniors: Every Thursday, Seniors’ Club meets in Northiam Village Hall from 10.30am until 2.30pm. All pensioners are welcome, and free door to door transport can be arranged for anyone in Northiam, Beckley, Peasmarsh and Broad Oak if you are on the Rye Community Bus route. The cost is £8 and includes welcome tea/coffee, a freshly cooked two course meal, extend chair exercises and a talk/entertainment. Call Ann 252343 or Joan 252568 to find out more as a member or a helper.

Bank: The mobile Natwest Bank calls on Thursdays, 2.45-3.30pm in the Village Hall car park.
