AN EVENING OF MUSIC: This event, in St Mary's Church last Saturday evening, was a great success. Husband and wife pair, Bradley and Elizabeth Curtis, making their first appearance in our church as musicians, were ably supported by Grace Constable (also new to us), Duncan Reid and Gary Marriott, combining to entertain us with a varied and interesting programme. Bradley and Elizabeth delighted us with their solos and a duet (the latter, by a German composer new to most of us, particularly enjoyable). Anyone who had heard Grace's beautiful voice before was expecting another treat, and certainly wasn't disappointed: her sensitive rendering of Mozart's Prayer to Mary and her duets with Gary (including a lovely duet from Monteverde's The Coronation of Poppaea) were outstanding. Gary treated us to some of his most expressive solos too, and Duncan performed some wonderful pieces on our fine organ, and then encouraged us all to join him in Teddy Bears' Picnic. Something for everyone, in fact! During the interval we made our way through the rain to the Hall and back, negotiating the rather slippery brick path without mishap. Expecting only the advertised 'canapés', we were there regaled with something more sumptuous, a veritable buffet supper, for which, and for all the admirable arrangements, we're most grateful to Susan Rowan and her committee of the Friends of St Mary's. The event is expected to have raised some £250 for the Friends' church restoration fund.

MACMILLAN COFFEE MORNING: Do make a point of dropping in at the Hall sometime between 10am and noon tomorrow (Saturday) for coffee and cakes. Despite what I wrote last week, there won’t be any other opportunities for shopping, but the raffle prizes will be some fine prints very generously presented by Brenda Hartill. You will be helping to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support, which does marvellous work for both patients and their close relatives.

SERVICES IN ST MARY’S: On Sunday morning there will be a celebration of Holy Communion at 8am, and the monthly Family Service for All at 11.15am, followed by refreshments in the church.

FLU CLINICS: This year children in reception class and years 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 will be offered the vaccination at school. Pre-school children aged 2, 3 and 4 can receive the Nasal Flu clinics at one of our surgeries from 1.30pm on Wednesday October 17, from 1.30pm on Wednesday October 31, or from 2pm on Thursday November 22. For pre-school children it’s ESSENTIAL to make an appointment in advance by ringing 01424 882394 or 01797 252140 - when you’ll also be told which surgery to go to (information I don’t have). Please make a note of these times and dates, which I’m publishing this week only. For adults whose surname starts with A to N the one and only clinic will be at Broad Oak surgery from 2pm to 3pm on Wednesday October 31. The turn of surnames M to Z will come at the same times on Wednesday November 28. I’ll try to include reminders in this column the week beforehand.

MUSIC AND SUPPER EVENING: Next Friday evening October 19, 7.15 for 7.30 in the Tilling Green Community Centre, Rye, this event has been arranged as a fundraiser for the Rye and District Dementia Action Alliance. Music will be provided by The Fieldstone Boys (a great local Skiffle band). For supper there’ll be bacon butties and beans, followed by home-made apple pie and custard. All for £7.50. To book tickets please ring 07737 350896.

THE GHOST: Next Saturday evening October 20, 7 for 7.30pm in Brede Village Hall Dr John Crook, will give an illustrated presentation on “Stephen Crane, the Brede Giant and the Ghost Play of 28 December 1899”. Dr Crook has an extensive knowledge of local history. An excellent speaker, he has given several fascinating talks on Brede-related themes. For more detailed information about Saturday’s talk, please turn to page 17 of the October Parish Magazine: it’s clearly going to be well up to Dr Crook’s usual high standard! The £7.50 price of entry tickets includes cheese, biscuits and a glass of wine. They are available from Marion Firman (01424 751165) or Pat Whately (01424 883069). This is a fundraising event for the Friends of St George’s Church, Brede.

WORLD WAR I SINGALONG: At 7pm on Saturday October 27 in St George’s Church this event, full of WWI favourites, will be led by Gary Marriott, Duncan Reid and friends. The ticket price of £12 includes a glass of wine and an authentic WWI buffet meal. We’re all invited to join the party, a fun evening to support The Royal British Legion “Thank You” appeal. And why not dress up in WWI fashion! For tickets please contact Gary (01424 882412), Sue (0142 883122) or Brian (01424 751165) as soon as possible, as numbers are limited.
