RECENT EVENTS: Matty and I had to miss the Soup and Scrabble and the Harvest Supper last week, but they both seem to have been well supported and very successful. In particular, I've been asked to mention how grateful the supper organizers are to the team of kind ladies who produced a substantial and delicious meal. Please note that the next in the series of lunchtime Soup and Scrabble parties will be at noon on Friday November 9.

Through being away that weekend, we also missed the Macmillan Coffee Morning which went very well too, raising the amazing sum of £900 for this admirable charity, thanks in no small part to the contribution of Rye Runners. Gillian and her team would like to thank them, and all of you who went along to support the event.

WORLD WAR I SINGALONG: I’ve heard that tickets for this event (which have had to be restricted in number) were selling very well, but it’s always worth trying for returns by ringing Gary Marriott (01424 882412), Sue Lee (01424 883122) or Brian Firman (01424 7511675). It’s in St George’s Church, Brede, starting at 7pm tomorrow (Saturday). The ticket price of £12 includes a glass of wine, an authentic WWI buffet meal and plenty of involvement in singing the old favourites.

SERVICES IN ST MARY’S: This Sunday there will be a service of Holy Communion at 8am (after the clocks go back to GMT, giving us an extra hour in bed) and a Benefice Evensong at 6pm (bring a torch and take special care on the brick-paved church path). This evensong is a special opportunity to welcome visitors from the three other churches in our benefice, Brede, Beckley and Peasmarsh.

‘FLU IMMUNISATION: You’re reminded that between 2pm and 3pm next Wednesday, October 31, the strongly recommended anti-‘flu injections will be available at Broad Oak surgery to all adult patients with surnames starting A – N. This is our only opportunity this year. Pre-school children may be immunised at 1.30pm the same afternoon, but only if appointments have been made for them previously (the surgery number is 01424 882394).

APPLE SCRUMPING: While we were away a thief (or thieves) took advantage of our absence to clear one tree of apples and partially clear another. So if any of you still have any fruit unpicked you’ve been warned: it could be your turn next!
