Autumn appears to now be upon us, so the wood burner is lit at the pub.

The Barn at The Royal Oak was full on Monday night to celebrate the Battle of Hastings with a two course dinner of roast chicken with leek pottage then honey bread pudding. It had a lovely community atmosphere and also provided us with the chance to welcome some new neighbours to the village.

The next Irish Music Night at The Royal Oak is on Friday 25th October when we shall once again enjoy the talents of local musicians during a jamming style session of traditional Irish tunes around the bar.

Tomorrow (Saturday 19th) there is another Jumble Sale at The Village Hall, so if you have some jumble or would like to help, call Angie on 01424 870087. I’m sure there will be lots of bargains there and it’s always worth coming along to have a bit of a rummage!! Doors open at 10am.

Tickets are still available for the 60s Night being held in the Village Hall on Friday 1st November from 7.30pm. If the previous 40s Night and Rock n Roll Nights are anything to go by, this is sure to be an excellent evening, so dig out your old 60s gear and come and join in on a fab and groovy time! Tickets are just £10 to include a light supper and are available from The Royal Oak or call Angie on 01424 870087.

Hilda provides the following regarding the Good Companions: On Wednesday 23rd October, at Whatlington Village Hall, starting at 2pm, Jeffrey Bridges has kindly offered to talk on “The Railways” . This is the October meeting for The Good Companions but all guest are most welcome...the more the merrier! There is a £1.00 entrance fee to cover the hire of the hall. Light refreshments will be served and there will be a raffle. As I have indicated above everyone will be most welcome, so please do join us!

Valerie has sent in some news from Whatlington and Mountfield School: “I was in school last week, hearing as I usually do once a week ,children read, and was pleased to hear of their recent visit to Drusilla’s and to see their scrap books with all the pictures of the children, the animals and the children enjoying the Adventure Park. They seem to have had a great day with all the animals. The usual favourite was the Meerkats but they also enjoyed the talk that was given on conservation, during which they were allowed to take turns holding a chinchilla and a snake and could touch a turtle shell. There was also the adventure park and best of all a ride on the Thomas the Tank train. They also had ice-cream and a gift from the shop to take home. As the recently elected Chairman of the PTA I was pleased that all the costs for the trip including lunch, ice-cream and the gift was funded by the PTA, their fund raising really support the school.”

The tissues (and more cushions!) will be out for the next Film Club showing of the award winning Les Miserables in The Barn on Friday 8th November at 7.30pm. We are now considering what our Christmas film should be, so have a think about it and send your suggestions to [email protected] - apparently Muppet Christmas Carol isn’t going to be considered (spoil sports...!).

The classic Jane Austen’s “Persuasion” is the current read for Book Club which will meet at The Royal Oak on Thursday 14th November to review it from 7pm, and then go on to take part in the weekly pub quiz from 8pm. Everyone is welcome to come and join us.
