Literary AGM: This evening (Friday) the Literary Society meets in the Lower Court Hall to hear a talk by the novelist and screen writer John Howlett. John has written biographies of James Dean and Frank Sinatra and his television achievements include Murder of a Moderate Man and Doomwatch. Light refreshments will be served from 7pm and the talk will begin at 7.30pm and nonmembers are welcome to make a donation. Also note that the 2018 Annual General Meeting will take place after the talk.

Bowls Coffee: The Bowls Club is a small friendly group who compete against similar teams in the area. Their next gathering is an at home Coffee Morning which will be held on Friday March 23rd in the Lower Court Hall from 10am until 12 noon. All are invited to come along for a cup of coffee with friends and there will also be a book stall and raffle available.

Day of Prayer: On Friday March 23rd there will be a second Day of Prayer and fasting at the Emmanuel Centre, Marsham Street London from 10am to 7pm. Last year’s Day of Prayer in September 2017 sowed the seeds of support for Teresa May and Brexit. This year the focus is on the disunity in government and the nation and a return to Biblical Authority. Once again the event is organised by the evangelist David Hathaway and his Ministry. For those not able to attend the London venue, meeting locally in home groups and individual prayer sessions (as took place last year) is also beneficial. During this period of Lent which considers Jesus’s mission on earth a scripture relevant to both occasions is ‘Where two or three are gathered together in my name there am I in the midst of them’ - Matthew 18:20. This coming event is just the beginning of continuing prayers for our country to be led by various Christian ministries.

WAS talk: There will be a Round Table talk by WAS member Terry Betson entitled ‘Changes in the Brede Valley through Medieval and Tudor times’ that concerns the River Brede and its valley which dominated Winchelsea through medieval times. The talk is arranged by Winchelsea Archaeological Society for next Saturday March 24th at 2.30pm in the New Hall. Plenty of parking space available and the talk is free to Society members and for non-members there is an admission charge of £5. Terry has acquired much knowledge of the River Brede from his longtime interest in the area and will share this in what is likely to be a lively debate. The talk finishes at 4pm with time allowed for discussion and audience participation over tea, coffee and biscuits.

Survival session: Rother Responders have organised a free Defibrillator Awareness Session for Monday March 26th at 7 till 8.30pm in the New Hall. Their aim is for more people in cardiac arrest to receive a quick lifesaving shock ahead of the ambulance to ensure they have the best chance of survival. In 2017 the Responders team installed Public Access Defibrillators around the area and they regularly run free training sessions on how to work the machinery. The team are also a registered charity and do not receive any NHS funding. If you would like to become involved in this worthwhile activity do come along to this next session.

Winchelsea Beach

Rescue boat: If you have a certain amount of spare time you might want to consider becoming a volunteer for the Pett Level Independent Rescue Boat Association (Registered Charity) They are looking for volunteers and the work involves saving lives inland and on the perilous coastline between Rye and Hastings. You will be part of friendly team and be trained in first aid, radio work, boat launching, recovery mechanics and much more. Two open days are coming soon where regular volunteers will be at hand to answer any questions about this valuable role and show you around the boathouse.
