Young life savers given a real boost

In presenting the cheque. Bexhill Lions President Paul Fleming said: “It’s so encouraging to see that youngsters are keen to get involved.

“Not only do they learn about valuable lifesaving skills and sea safety but also get active, make new friends and learn to work as part of a team. They are a great asset to Bexhill and we are delighted to support them.”

The club is into its second year now. Last year the number of members was kept low as they had limited equipment and skill s to be able to ensure a safe environment for the young members.

This year however they have secured a grant from Active Rother which will be used to train some of the adults/parents to provide safety cover for the weekly sea sessions in spring.

In the meantime they have booked St Mary’s School swimming pool for weekly juniors training, to be held on Sunday afternoons starting this month..

Currently the Club has 16 children enrolled and they can take a maximum of 20 in the first term with a view of increasing that number to 30 for the second term.

In accepting the cheque from Bexhill Lions, Bexhill Surf chair person Susan Reynolds said: “This will go a long way to helping the club buy much needed equipment, to be used during our pool training sessions and also in training our adult safety cover so that the sessions can be safely transferred into the sea during the summer months.

“We will also be encouraging the Junior Section to get involved with the competitive side to lifesaving with competitions that regularly take place locally, nationally and at an international level. Hopefully this money will be helping to train stars of the future.”

Sue Cassell, the Lions’ Youth Committee Chair commented: “This kind of activity really helps develop the youngsters’ character and confidence as well as them taking pride in their local community and environment. We look forward to working with them more closely in the future”
