Young writers inspired by author’s advice in Angmering

Aspiring young authors in Angmering were treated to a morning of literary bliss on Friday as a professional writer visited the village offering some top tips of the trade.

South African-born author Lauren St John visited The Angmering School to share her wealth of knowledge with more than 60 primary and secondary school children.

Lauren spoke to the year-six and seven youngsters about one of her latest books, Dead Man’s Cove.

And the pupils attending the morning certainly relished in the chance to meet the children’s author.

Many queued to have their books signed by Lauren as well as catching a rare opportunity to chat with the idolised writer.

Riley Ford, 10, of East Preston goes to St John the Baptist CofE Primary School, in Findon. He said: “I really enjoyed it because I thought it was really inspiring seeing how she creates her books.

“I’ve read Dead Man’s Cove so it was cool to learn how she wrote the book.”

The visit was organised as part of next year’s West Sussex Children’s Book Awards. Lauren is one of the nominated writers competing for the top spot.

She said: “The children were really enthusiastic which was brilliant. I love speaking to them and inspiring them to read and write. It’s such a privilege.”

The award winner will be announced in March.
