Youngsters help keep trees green on North Bersted estate

Young litter-pickers ensured a North Bersted estate was clean and green.

The team of about 15 youngsters, aged between four and ten, filled up to 20 black bags between them with rubbish from the Trees estate.

They made full use of the novelty grabbers taken along for the community day based in Scyamore Road.

Their enthusiastic efforts were among the highlights of several activities at the event held by Arun District Council and the Trees Estate Residents' Association.

Arun street scene co-ordinator Dan Cox said: "This is the first event we have held with the residents' association.

"It's been such a success that we will probably be repeating it."

Cllr Paul Wotherspoon, in charge of the council's environment services, said: "This day is about everyone in the community coming together for the benefit of their estate.

"We are delighted to be working with the residents' association to help make the area better for local people."

All ages among the 40 visitors found something of interest, ranging from free energy-saving lightbulbs to facts about the council's recently-expanded recycling service and a survey about the location of a new recycling centre.

Graffiti and fly-tipping was also tackled.

A fire crew from Bognor fire station went along to show the children their firefighting equipment and to pass on details of their free home fire safety checks. Police community support officers were also present.
