‘Gateway’ answer is like curates egg

In the headline to his report on the Queensway Gateway (Observer 13th Feb), Andy Hemsley posed the question ‘Is the new link road ‘Gateway’ good for Battle?’. The answer is an annoying Yes and No. No, because it hasn’t been given a start date yet and will take about two years to complete - i.e. long after the BHLR is opened. This means that during the construction period heavy traffic heading to the BHLR along the A21 will travel via Battle and along the Ridge. But yes, because once finished, the Gateway, with its new roundabout at Baldslow, will provide a quicker and easier route to the BHLR.

Of course you have to ask yourself why this Gateway couldn’t be have been constructed at the same time as the BHLR, but that requires forward thinking, an ability that Is sadly lacking where it is most needed.
