Let us not pretend

I am sure I was not the only person to read with a degree of surprise Tony Smith’s suggestion in Letters February 12 that supporters of Britain staying in the EU are ‘scare-mongering…. in desperation’.

Iain Duncan Smith’s outrageous suggestion that ‘Brexit’ would render us less vulnerable to terror attacks could scarcely be matched for unfounded ‘scare-mongering’.

For many years the majority of the British tabloid press, mainly owned by (non EU) foreigners or ‘adult TV’ proprietors have been feeding the paranoia of the anti EU camp with laughable stories of EU bans on bananas (bendy), buses (double decker), bagpipes (Scottish), balloons (inflated by eight year olds), hair nets (fishermen for the use of) etcetera ad infinitum.

However, the most significant issue is far more fundamental.

All four of the London 7/7 bombers grew up and were shaped in Britain.

Almost all the Paris bombers were ‘home grown’.

To our national shame, it appears that several hundred disaffected British nationals have travelled abroad to pursue their perverted interpretation of Islam in the Middle East.

Britain has in truth been a net exporter of terror.

Close co-operation with our partners in Europe, and working with community leaders to address the root causes of that disaffection offer the greatest hope of security.

Boris Johnson may have chosen to align himself with Nigel Farage, George Galloway and Vladimir Putin in wishing to see us leave the EU, but please let no-one pretend that ‘Brexit’ will protect us from terrorism.
