Bexhill Cricket Club’s under-18 team fell at the final hurdle in its bid to become Sussex Big Smash T20 champions.
Bexhill lost out to a very strong Worthing side in a final played under floodlights at the BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground on Sunday evening.
After winning the toss, Bexhill captain Byron Smith chose to bat first, but from the very first ball of the game when Liam Bryant was very unfortunate to be given out, Bexhill were on the back foot.
Number three Cameron Burgon helped move the score along with 22, but the Worthing bowlers kept a stranglehold on the run rate throughout.
Will Edwards, Will Harvey and Smith all contributed to push Bexhill to 84-8 at the end of their 20 overs, while Harry Dunn claimed 4-14 off his four overs with his left arm spin.
Early wickets were vital in Bexhill’s quest for victory and captain Smith obliged in the first over. However, despite their best efforts, Bexhill could only claim two more victims as Worthing reached 85-3 at the end of the 13th over to triumph.
Earlier in the day, Bexhill had defeated Findon in a low scoring semi-final. After being put in, Bryant and Ben Phillimore blasted 35 off the opening three overs, but then saw wickets fall at regular intervals to slow down the rate.
Edwards made a fantastic 31 not out and helped by Kieran Malone, put on 25 for the last wicket to post a competitive 109 all out from the full 20 overs.
Bexhill’s bowlers dominated Findon’s reply. Smith (1-8) and Freddie Ulmann (3-20) reduced Findon to 10-4 before Bryant (2-13), Harvey (1-13) and Edwards (3-11) caused the innings to crumble to 68 all out.
The players would like to thank the supporters who made the trip to Hove to cheer them on.
