Bexhill Cricket Club is flying high in the Sussex Premier League’s top four at the midway stage of the season.
Bexhill have won five of their nine league games so far, including all of their last three, and are performing strongly with bat and ball at present.
We don’t realistically hold out any hopes of winning the league, but I think if we finish in the top half I would be absolutely delighted.Ian Cox
First team coach Ian Cox said: “It’s brilliant and it’s deserved. We’ve taken 83 wickets out of a possible 90 and that makes a massive difference.
“We know we can bowl teams out and that gives you a lot of confidence. If we get over 200 (batting first), teams are going to struggle against us.
“The batting is more consistent. We’ve still got areas to work on with our batting, but the boys have put in a lot of hard work and it certainly seems at this stage to have paid dividends. You just hope it continues for the future.”
Bexhill are 16 points above fifth-placed Horsham with a game in hand and 38 adrift of third-placed Roffey, who trail table-topping Preston Nomads by just 11 points.
“We don’t realistically hold out any hopes of winning the league, but I think if we finish in the top half I would be absolutely delighted,” added Cox. “If we play like we have been playing, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t do that.”
Bexhill will begin the second half of their Sussex Premier League campaign with a trip to Brighton & Hove today (Saturday).
Although Bexhill were soundly beaten in the reverse fixture on the opening day, conditions will be very different this time around and Bexhill produced possibly their best performance of 2014 to win the corresponding fixture last term.
Haffenden is at a wedding and Guest is working, but Luke Youngs made his debut last weekend and is expected to feature fairly regularly from now on.
“He’s going to be a decent acquisition,” added Cox. “He’s a good gloveman and batted with real intent. He made a big difference.”
