Brilliant Bargh retains top title

Cathy Bargh defeated both of last year’s European Championship finalists to clinch another badminton title.

The Sedlescombe-based talent retained the over-45 women’s singles at the 95th All England Seniors Open Badminton Championships after beating European winner Jeannette van der Werff and runner-up Lone Knudsen.

She said: “I’m thrilled to have beaten the two of them in the same tournament on the same day. To win it the second year and to get those wins was very, very important to keep my ranking and for the kudos.”

Despite her victory in 2010, Bargh wasn’t among the two seeds in a field of 10 players from five different countries, including Malaysia. Those places went to van der Werff and Knudsen.

She, nevertheless, topped Group B in the round-robin stage after winning all three of her matches in straight games at the National Badminton Centre in Milton Keynes.

Bargh secured her fourth consecutive victory over second seed Knudsen (Denmark) 21-14, 21-17, as well as seeing off Christine Selchow (Germany) 21-8, 21-6 and Sandra Kroon (Netherlands) 21-10, 21-4.

Freedom Leisure Summerfields coach Bargh then got the better of another Dutch lady, van der Werff, 21-19, 12-21, 21-15 in a long, three-set final to continue her excellent start to 2011.
