Bexhill captain hopes to return after painful blow

Bexhill Cricket Club captain Johnathan Haffenden hopes to return to action this weekend just a week after having to be treated by ambulance staff.

Haffenden became stuck under a sightscreen while trying to erect it prior to last weekend’s Sussex Premier League clash at home to Horsham.

He said: “It was the most pain I’ve ever been in. My back just went into spasm and locked. I fell to the floor and I couldn’t move, my legs wouldn’t straighten out.

“The paramedics were brilliant to be fair. After a lot of gas and air I managed to straighten my legs out. They put this inflatable under me and I had to slowly start bending my back to get into a sitting position, and gradually get back to my feet.”

Bexhill will host Worthing today (Saturday, 12.30pm start) and Haffenden is determined to hit straight back from last weekend’s heavy defeat to table-topping Horsham.

“Bouncing back is a massive thing for us,” said Haffenden, who hopes to return along with Callum Guest. “I don’t want to see a performance like that again for the rest of the season and I’m sure the boys won’t want it either. It was a horrible feeling getting hammered.

“We’ve lost to probably the strongest side in the league this year, but we’ve done well up to now. You’re going to have some setbacks, but it’s how you bounce back - that’s the most important thing.”

Bexhill lie third in the table having won two, drawn one and lost one so far, while Worthing are third-from-bottom with one win, two losses and two abandonments.

“You always want to win every home game, whoever it’s against,” added Haffenden. “It’s a good week to put stuff right from last week. I want a good reaction from everyone. It’s a case of keep looking forward now, let last week go.”
