Bexhill captain hoping big win will fuel belief

Bexhill Cricket Club captain Johnathan Haffenden is hoping last weekend's superb victory will make his players believe they can beat the Sussex Premier League's leading teams.

Bexhill produced a tremendous display to win by 141 runs away to a Horsham side which went into the game lying second in the table.

Haffenden said: “We’ve beaten a top two side; it’s what we’ve been aiming to do. We wanted to beat those teams and to beat Horsham was a big thing.

“Belief has always been a thing we’ve probably been lacking so I’m hoping it gives us belief that we can beat the top sides.

“But we still have to work just as hard against all of the sides. We still have got to make sure we score high 200s to put us in a position to take 10 wickets.”

The result has moved fourth-placed Bexhill to within 13 points and one position of their victims with a game in hand.

A victory away to bottom-of-the-table Worthing today (Saturday) would leave Bexhill beautifully placed going into their double header at home to Roffey and the Sussex Development XI next weekend.

Haffenden said: “We’ve got ourselves into a great position and we’ve got a good few weeks to carry this on now. We’ve got six games to go, 180 points to play for and we want every single point we can get.”

Worthing are 48 points adrift at the foot of the table, but clung on for a draw in the reverse fixture during June.

“They need to start pulling results out from somewhere,” continued Haffenden. “But if we can just keep doing as we have been doing, I’m pretty sure we’ll be in with a good shout of winning another game of cricket.

“Everyone’s pulling their weight and doing very well. Sam (Roberts) has done a hell of a lot, but other people have chipped in. (Josh) Beeslee’s been fantastic for us and it shows how well he’s bowling that Callum (Guest) is not getting a bowl at the moment.

“These boys can be together for a long time and do some very good things.”
