Explosive American stock car racing closes Angmering summer season

ANGMERING Raceway delivered some really explosive racing to close the summer season.

The visiting Miniature American Stock Cars (MASCAR) racers got things off to a blazing start with a hotly contested first heat that saw the red flags come out for a hair raising crash for Juli Stanford on the home straight.

Her very mangled car caused a few minutes concern around the circuit, but the driver emerged OK, while the car was towed back to the pits for emergency repairs. The race was won by Juli's husband, Steve.

Heat two for the visiting drivers saw Steve visiting the unforgiving safety fence and leaving the track with a severely rearranged car as Russ Best powered his miniature American stock car under the chequered flag for the win.

After some frantic work in the pits all the MASCARs were on the grid for the final. Juli was clearly determined to make up for the earlier misfortune and was soon powering around the track, building a commanding lead over the rest of the pack.

An exciting battle for second place saw the position swapped several times between Best and Stanford While Juli continued to build an unassailable lead. The final result was Juli Stanford, Russ Best, Steve Stanford, bringing the MASCAR visit to a great finish.

There was plenty of action from British racing machines as well with final wins going to Bradley Alan in the Junior Production Stocks, Craig Cooper in the Junior Rods and Zi Jones in the 1600 FWD Rods. There were final wins in the Street Stocks for Robert Shine and for Rob Richardson in the front wheel drive Saloon Rods. The classic British stock cars saw a final win for Steve Hillier.
