Farriers leading the field in foot care

LEADING the field in the quest to treat and prevent equine lameness is The Farriery Practice, based at Bridge House Equestrian Centre, Horsham.Headed by partners David Nicholls, Mark Spriggs and Mike Williamsons, the practice has been dedicated to raising standards of equine footcare since its foundation in 1990.

Last week, in conjunction with the Equine Lameness Protection Organisation they hosted a three-day Natural Balance certification course at Chichester College, Brinsbury,with examinations for experienced farriers who want to further their knowledge.sionals throughout the UK.

The course covered barefoot trimming, hoof mapping and natural balance shoeing all designed to help prevent horse lameness.

Six farriers including Matt Staples from Crawley, came from Kent, Surrey and Sussex in a quest to further their expertise.

On hand was Gene Ovincek, an American specialist in lameness and renowned for his studies of wild horses.
