Albion must try to make history away to Sheffield Wednesday

Albion will look to beat Sheffield Wednesday on the Owls' home turf for the first time in the club's history as the need for points intensifies.

The Seagulls sit just one place above the dreaded drop zone and are ahead of Millwall only on goal difference after a lacklustre 0-0 draw against Cardiff City on Tuesday night.

A first clean sheet since the club's 1-0 away win at Charlton Athletic was one of few positives the Albion will take from the stalemate with the Welsh side, who were booed off by their supporters.

The return of Dale Stephens to first-team action after months on the sidelines was the only other real plus point of a game that summed up much of why the Albion have struggled this season.

Brighton boasted 60% of possession against the Bluebirds, but managed only a solitary shot on target.

So far this season, the Albion have the Championship's sixth-highest average possession (53.7%) and the division's fourth-highest average number of shots per game (15.4). The drop, however, to 12th-best in terms of efforts on target per game (4.3) and a lowly 18th for goals scored (32).

Coincidentally, that total of 32 goals is actually nine more than Saturday's opposition.

Sheffield Wednesday have the Championship's lowest goal tally (23), but sit a comfortable 10th in the table, due largely to a strong defence marshalled by in-form goalkeeper Kieran Westwood, who was one of a string of custodians linked to the Albion in the summer.

Wednesday are winless in five Championship games, but have made efforts to improve their squad in recent weeks - with Manchester United attacking prospect Will Keane arriving on loan.

Chris Hughton's options are improving, with Kazenga Lua Lua now competing for a starting place at a time when pace and attacking intent is vital to the club's chances.
