Barry wins 50th England cap

The Hastings born and raised footballer won his 50th England cap when he replaced match-winner Frank Lampard in the 56th minute of the surprise win over Spain.

Barry, 30, made his England debut in a friendly against Ukraine in May 2000, but it wasn’t until 2007 that he established himself as a regular in the national set-up.

The former William Parker Sports College pupil, pictured, has scored two goals in the England colours and has worn the captain’s armband on several occasions.

Barry, who made three appearances in the 2010 World Cup, also captained England at under-18 level and won a then all-time record-equalling 27 caps for the under-21s.

The defensive midfielder, who played youth football for St Vincents and Spartan locally, has made well over 400 club appearances for Aston Villa and Manchester City, scoring nearly 50 goals.
