Bexhill boss criticises young players' commitment

Having last month accused senior players of ‘bottling out’ of the Easter Monday derby against Little Common, Munday has now criticised the commitment of some of the club’s young players.

Munday has been frustrated by poor availability and late withdrawals over an extended period, and says some young players should have been far more grateful for the opportunity given to them at senior level.

He said: “I got pulled into a meeting at the end of January and the club said the route they wanted to go down is with the youth.

“I said I didn’t feel any of them were good enough to play the level we’re playing at and I’m finding most of them haven’t got the right attitude, but I did what the club wanted.

“Maybe the youth was the right way, but the way these boys can let you down so continuously makes you feel a little bit gutted about the whole thing.

“Although I don’t think they’re anywhere near good enough, we’re giving youngsters a chance to play senior football. If that was me, I would’ve taken that opportunity with everything because they’ve actually got a chance that they wouldn’t have got with any other club.

“But they’re the boys that let me down week in, week out. Some might be telling me the truth, but because I’ve heard so many things - and so late in the day - I can’t tell what’s the truth and what isn’t.

“The generation coming through, football is completely different for them. I just don’t feel they care as much as we did and I feel for those boys that have stuck by me.”

A Bexhill United spokesman said the club’s committee didn’t instruct Munday to go down the youth route.

Having lost their last seven matches, Bexhill are in danger of falling into Macron Store Southern Combination Football League Division One’s bottom three ahead of the season’s final weekend.

Bexhill must match the result of Midhurst & Easebourne to remain in their present position of fourth-from-bottom, although they could move up a place if they fare better than Selsey, who are currently fifth-from-bottom.

Bexhill are away to Ringmer, who are two places above them, Midhurst make the long journey to Little Common and Selsey host fifth-placed Southwick tomorrow (Saturday).

“I’m looking forward to Saturday and I’ve decided I don’t want to take anyone in my squad who has let me down in the past,” added Munday.
