In a game mired in controversy and incident, the Seagulls went behind early on courtesy of a towering header from Baggies defender Kyle Bartley.

Albion then had their first major chance to equalise when Okay Yokuslu handled in the area, but Pascal Gross saw his penalty cannon back off the bar and away to safety.

Things then took a bizarre turn when Lewis Dunk beat West Brom stopper Sam Johnstone with a quickly-taken free-kick.

Referee Lee Mason initially allowed the goal to stand before deliberating with VAR and eventually deciding that he had not blown his whistle in time for the goal to stand. Dunk’s strike was subsequently chalked off.

Brighton kept on pressing for an equaliser after the break, however, and had another gilded opportunity to peg the Baggies back when Gross was brought down in the penalty area deep into the second half.

This time Danny Welbeck stepped up, but he also saw his attempt hit the woodwork.

The result leaves Brighton four points clear of the drop zone, with Fulham and Newcastle United both holding a game in hand over Graham Potter's men.

@DeanParamount tweeted: “How much longer is Potter going to do the same press conference after the game and be protected? His choice of striker clearly doesn’t work and being a Brighton supporter is becoming harder every week. Hughton was released for no different”.

@BHALeo_ tweeted: “We did absolutely everything right except score, which is an embarrassment considering we’ve had 65 shots in two games and scored once. Fair enough not scoring one penalty not being on target but two in one game?!?”
