Buckswood School will bid to win a national title at the home of Birmingham City Football Club today (Friday).
The Guestling-based school will take on Batley Grammar School (Spen Valley) in the final of the English Schools’ FA Premier League Under-16 Small Schools’ Cup at St Andrew’s. Kick-off is 1.30pm.
The squad was due to travel up to the Midlands yesterday before staying overnight in preparation for the big day.
This is the first year that Buckswood have taken part in a new competition for schools with fewer than 65 year 11 boys on their roll.
They beat the competition favourites South Nottinghamshire Academy (South Notts) 4-1 at the semi-final stage having previously knocked out Ibstock Place School (Richmond) 2-0, Battle Abbey School (South East Sussex) 4-0, Ursuline College (Thanet) 4-1 and Lingfield Notre Dame (South Surrey) 2-0.
Buckswood has a football academy run by director of football Jim Colston, who trains the international academy players three times per week.
This year has been a particularly successful one for the academy, with a player being signed for Brighton & Hove Albion and one currently trialling for Italian giants AC Milan.
