The Commoners will entertain Midhurst & Easebourne tomorrow (Saturday) targeting a third successive Macron Store Southern Combination Football League Division One victory.

“Three successive wins would be a good achievement and that’s what we’re looking for,” said Common player-manager Russell Eldridge.

“Although there’s nothing to play for in terms of league positions, we want to put on a good performance for the supporters that come and watch us week in, week out.”

A win would ensure Common finish at least eighth and possibly seventh - if Lingfield drop points away to Mile Oak.

Midhurst need at least a draw to stand a chance of finishing outside the bottom three and face a round trip of nearly 130 miles on the final day of the campaign.

“It’s a good opportunity for us,” added Eldridge, who will be without the unavailable Steve Mote. “It’s a good game to have last game of the season.”

Of last weekend’s 2-0 win at Seaford Town, Eldridge said: “It was a good result. It was a little bit laboured in the first half. Although I didn’t think we were ever struggling as such, we were a little bit sloppy and the chances they had were from our mistakes.

“I said to the boys at half time it wasn’t acceptable, and we can’t just decide to turn it on and off. We started the second half really well and scored two goals in quick succession to kill the game.

“The first goal was the key thing; that deflated them a bit, we raised our game and thereafter we were in control. Maybe we didn’t have the quality we could’ve done at times, but we did enough to see the game out and secure the victory, which was the most important thing.”
