One goal in the first half and two more in the second put Common through to the Sussex Principal RUR Charity Cup quarter-finals for the second successive season with a 3-0 victory at the Recreation Ground.

Common player-manager Russell Eldridge said: “Having lost at the weekend, I think it was important to win on Tuesday night. We probably would’ve wanted it (the results) the other way round, but we’ve moved into the quarter-final, which is obviously a good achievement again.”

Common made several largely enforced changes from the league meeting, including first starts of the season for Zack McEniry and Steve Mote in defence.

Neither goalkeeper had a great deal to do during a fairly even first half, but Common made the breakthrough shortly before half time when Dan Cruikshank headed home an Eldridge corner at the near post.

Common began the second period on the front foot and doubled their advantage through a good finish into the top corner by Martin Denny after good work from Adam Smith on the right.

The result was put beyond doubt when Harry Saville played a nice ball through for Jamie Crone to round the goalkeeper and slot home Common’s third.

Saville also forced a good save from the goalkeeper with a free kick and Crone had the ball in the net only to flagged offside.

“It was a mature, solid performance,” added Eldridge, whose team will travel to Crowborough Athletic in the last eight on a date to be announced. "We defended well and took our chances at the other end when they arose."
