John Maggs believes that Peacehaven & Telscombe and Leatherhead are looking like being Hastings United’s main title rivals this season.

Peacehaven top the Ryman Football League Division One South table at Christmas having won 10 and drawn two of their last 12 league games. Leatherhead are just two points off the pace in third.

United manager Maggs said: “I’ve seen Leatherhead a couple of times and I think they’re probably the strongest squad in the league. You can’t do anything else, but give credit to Peacehaven, who have done extremely well. All the time they’re winning you’ve got to respect that they’re one of the sides who are going to be challenging alongside ourselves.”

The fixtures are already starting to stack up for a United side which trained indoors at Bexhill Leisure Centre after Saturday’s game at home to Chipstead was postponed. The U’s have four midweek games in January and two in the first half of February.

“We’re falling behind a little bit now and by the law of averages we’re going to get one or two (more) off with the weather,” continued Maggs. “We’re brought up to probably play Tuesday and Saturday, and providing it gets no more severe than that, we will cope.”

Dual-registered full-back Charlie Slocombe has returned to parent club Tonbridge Angels. “He’s still registered with us so he’s not gone for keeps,” added Maggs.
