Hope is fading fast for Chichester City

Sussex League division-one basement side Chichester showed no signs of a great escape in a 2-0 defeat at Shoreham.

Chichester missed a glorious chance on 16 minutes when Brad Grant missed from six yards after Shoreham keeper Sam Armfield had saved Callum Cutler’s low shot.

On 42 minutes, Dean Smith’s goalbound shot was handled on the line by a City player. But neither the referee nor his assistant knew who had handled, so Chichester kept the full compliment of players on the pitch – and Batey kept out Alex Jones’ spot-kick.

Mussels went ahead when Clay Lamont’s effort was blocked but Smith fired home from seven yards.

On 74 minutes Dan Jordan challenged Batey from Josh Clayman’s corner and the kick flew in, maybe with the aid of a deflection.
