The Commoners were without the unavailable Ryan Paul and Paul Feakins but manager Russell Eldridge was able to shuffle his pack following the midweek win against Loxwood.

After a fairly even opening it was Common who took the lead in the 14th minute when Liam Ward ‘s through ball released Hole and after checking back onto his favoured left foot he fired an effort past the home keeper from the edge of the area – a historic moment for the Common striker who notched the 350th goal of his Common career in the process.

Common began to boss proceedings and looked the most likely to add to the scoresheet as they played into a stiff Oval breeze.

The second goal arrived after half an hour when a United player was penalised for handball and Eldridge struck the resultant penalty into the roof of the net.

Two soon became three when Lewis Parsons rose highest to head home a Kian Moynes corner and the Commoners looked to put the game to bed before the interval. A fourth nearly arrived on the stroke of half time but Eldridge’s free kick was saved and Harvey Greig’s rebound was blocked by the arm of a United defender with the referee waving away Common’s penalty claims. At the other end Phil Hakwins did well to push away a goal bound United corner but the score remained 3-0 to Common at the break.

The hosts started a little livelier after the interval without really causing too many problems for the Common defence, Kane Penn twice took aim from distance but failed to trouble Hawkins. At the other end Freddie Warren saw an effort blocked before Moynes fizzed an effort across the face of the goal. With twelve minutes remaining Charlie Ball gave the home side hope when he fired in from close range and when Penn fired in a second three minutes from time the Commoners knew they were in for a nervous final few minutes.

The hosts almost equalised in injury time but Parsons was on hand to head an effort off the line and with time running out it was Common who completed the scoring to seal the points when Harry Saville’s pinpoint delivery into the area found Hole who guided the ball past the home keeper.

Squad: Hawkins, Clark, Weeks, Ward, Parsons, Eldridge, Moynes (Saville), Greig, Hole, Warren (Miriam-Batchelor), A.Smith (K.Smith).
