Local lad Legge plays at Wembley

The former Bexhill High School and Bexhill College student played the full 90 minutes for Brentford in their 1-0 defeat to Carlisle United in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final.

Legge told Observer Sport: “Being out on the pitch and just seeing the flags, and the banners and everything, it was just a great experience. It was a bit nervy walking out the tunnel, but as soon as the whistle went I was just focused on the game.”

Peter Murphy scored the only goal of the match following a 12th minute corner, although aerially strong centre-half Legge headed wide from Gary Alexander’s late cross as Brentford rallied during the second half despite going down to 10 men.

“I was so disappointed,” continued Legge. “Any other day that would’ve gone in. I score those in training and other games, whereas in that game it just seemed to zip off my head.

“Obviously we’re disappointed about the result, but it was a privilege to play at Wembley. Some guys in their whole career never get a chance so I’m lucky.”

Walking out on the hallowed Wembley turf was the latest chapter in Legge’s footballing fairytale. Two years ago he was playing in the Ryman League for Tonbridge Angels and was a care worker for adults with learning difficulties.
